Forest Canopies: Frontiers of Ecosystem Services

The canopy is the defining components of any forest ecosystem and is known to harbour a large proportion of global biodiversity. The canopy community is vitally important for the essential roles in ecosystem functioning and services that it plays. Over the last several decades there have been significant advances in canopy science, and extensive education programs have been successful in disseminating information about the importance of forests and their canopies in promoting human well-being. There remain many challenges in understanding canopy systems in order to make predictions about the consequences of global-scale human disturbances and their impact on forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Much further research is needed to understand fully forests and their canopy ecosystems.
The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences, has just completed the installation of a new canopy crane adjacent to the CForBio 20 ha permanent forest diversity monitoring plot within the rainforests of Xishuangbanna. This crane joins the global network of such facilities and aims to boost progress in canopy science and education both locally and internationally. XTBG is strategically placed close to all other rainforests of northern Southeast Asia where little research in canopy science has been conducted to date.
Following an international workshop on forest canopies in 2006 in Kunming, China, XTBG is proud to announce an international canopy workshop to bring together a further group of global leaders in canopy science at XTBG from October 27th – 29th 2015 to showcase cutting-edge studies and foster global research using the network of canopy facilities. The workshop aims to identify key outstanding issues in canopy science and establish new international collaborations to tackle them.
We cordially invite you to attend the workshop and join with Chinese and international canopy scientists to make it an outstanding success.

Registration Fee: 600 Yuan RMB
Registration includes: three meals and two tea breaks per day (27th and 28th October); workshop materials; local transportation (Menglun); garden admission fees and shuttle transfers within the garden.
