I. Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass and Nanocatalyst Synthesis

      by Prof. Fang Zhen

This presentation includes 5 parts:

1. Introduction of Myself

(education and research experience);

2. Thermal Conversion of Biomass

(thermal gasification, fast-pyrolysis, hydrothermal hydrolysis, gasification and liquefaction, hydrothermal de-polymerization of biomass and synthesis of chemicals);

3. Hydrothermal Oxidation and Reaction of Organics

(Supercritical water oxidation, hydrothermal flame, recycling of polymers, extraction chemicals from biomass and fuel upgrading);

4. Hydrothermal Synthesis of Nanoparticles

as catalysts and sensors for biomass conversion

[synthesized particles for catalytic H2 production (e.g., Ni, Ni-Sn), for liquefaction (Pt/SiO2-Al2O3), for catalytic hydrothermal oxidation (e.g., MnO2, TiO2, ZrO2) and for Fischer-Tropsch process (Fe/Co), for sensors (e.g., SnO2, Fe2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, CeO2) and biomaterials (phosphates of Ca, Mg, Co and Fe)];

5. Promising Areas

(1) Production of HC liquid fuels

a. Fischer-Tropsch: diesel from syngas (High-P)

b. Upgrading bio-oils (vegetable oil, fast-pyrolysis oil, liquefied oil);

c Gasoline production from glucose

(2) Production H2 from biomass and water

a.       Hydrothermal gasification (methanol synthesis from hydrothermal gas: H2+CO2)

b. H2 from photo-decomposition of water with catalyst (e.g., TiO2)

(3) Hydrothermal hydrolysis or pretreatment of biomass for biological conversion;

(4) Fast pyrolysis for biopolymers, chemicals and fuels;

(5) organics synthesis/extraction in hydrothermal water;

(6) Catalyst synthesis in hydrothermal water.

 II. Preparation of biodiesel

  by Dr.  Deng Xin

  This presentation includes 4 parts:

1. Introduction of biodiesel

2. Biodiesel preparation using solid base catalyst

  2.1 Preparation of the hydrotalcite solid base catalyst

  2.2 characterization of solid base catalyst

  2.3 preparation of biodiesel (optimization condition)

3. Biodiesel preparation using immobilized lipase as catalyst

  3.1 domestication of lipase

  3.2 immobilized lipase (optimization condition)

  3.3 preparation of biodiesel (optimization condition)
