Summer Camp for ethnic minority youth completed

Bearing the responsibility of increasing public awareness of protecting environment and spreading knowledge, the Ecological Society of Yunnan organized a 5-day summer camp for teenagers and adolescents from Jingdong County during July 16-20.

  Under the theme of “Ecological Environment & Protection”, the summer camp is aimed to provide chances for ethnic minority youth to communicate with scientific professionals, to visit scientific facilities, and to better understand the significance of protecting the environment.

 

    A series of activities were organized for the participants, involving the ethnic minority youth in d popular science education and vacationing.

 

By inviting XTBG professional to deliver lectures, the participants had a general idea about tropical rainforest and the interesting phenomenon of fig and fig wasps in the tropical rainforest.

 

By reading posters provided by some universities and research institutions, the participants had better understandings on basic knowledge of biology and ecology from different angles.

 

 The ethnic minority youth were shown around herbaria of Yunnan University, Southwest Forestry College, and Kunming Institute of Botany, the Museum of Zoology in Kunming,and Yunnan Astronomical Observatory. They also visited the Western Hills in Kunming and learned something about the vegetation.

 

 Moreover, the participants were encouraged to have discussions and write reports of investigation or essays on popular science.
