A group of 30 pupils from Kunming Lianhua Primary School opened the summer camp of XTBG in early July. The summer camp is aimed at leading children from urban city to know about tropical rainforest, having intimate contact with nature, and increasing their awareness of protecting ecological environment and loving nature.

The summer camp was co-organized by Ecological Society of Yunnan, Kunming Lianhua Primary School, and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG).

The 6-day summer camp was well organized. The activities for kids included having a scientific exploration in the tropical rainforest, green orienteering, pressed flower art, secret garden, watching wildlife in the night, etc. The camp members also visited Dai villages in the vicinity of XTBG.

The kids got a chance to closely work with the scientists, namely “Hands in hands between scientists and kids” activity.

Prof. Liu Aizhong lectured “the colors of flowers”, and introduced the roles of flower colors in nature in the field.

Dr. Peng Yanqiong introduced the interesting interactions between figs and fig wasps.

Ms. Fan Xuli led the students to explore the intriguing structures of orchids.

Moreover, the kids designed an experiment to know about the impact of plants on the soil pH.
