More than 1,500 pupils and middle school students came to participate in winter camp in XTBG during January 16-27. The winter camp included “Kids rainforest camp”, “Parent-child rainforest camp”, and “Science exploration camp”. The winter camp is a fun learning experience in natural environment of tropical rainforest and a research institution of CAS.

Fun and knowledge were top on the agenda of the winter camp activities. Family camp at XTBG provided a space where families can play, laugh, and enjoy rest and refreshment. Besides some traditional camp activities, XTBG specially organized lectures, learning to press flower, and sightseeing in the evening, etc, which were both fun and creative.

In the science exploration camp, primary and middle school students got a chance to closely work with the scientists at XTBG while taking part in winter camp. Many professors, associate professors and graduate students volunteered in popularizing scientific knowledge of tropical ecological studies and conservation. The participants got a general understanding on tree rings, seed vitality, co-evolution of figs and fig wasps, insect diversity, frugivorous birds and botanical gardens, impact of light on plants, molecular ecology of soil microorganism, chemical constituents of plant leaves, comparison of ecological characteristics of rubber forest and tropical rainforest, etc.

“Hands in hands between scientists and adolescents” has become a brand popular science activity in XTBG. After the Spring Festival, many batches of students will come to have winter camp in XTBG. The popular science activity will last until late February.
