Since ancient times, orchids have been celebrated in China for their beauty and fragrance, and appreciated as symbol of nobility, friendship and refinement. Xishuangbanna is one of the most orchid-rich areas in China. Many orchid plants are in full blossom in March and April.

Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) is now offering an orchid exhibition at Shade Plant Garden. Visitors are able to view a variety of orchids on display. Among them, the golden-bow Dendrobium or fried-egg orchid (Dendrobium chrysotoxum), Chinese cymbidium (Cymbidium sinense), and lady slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) are most attractive.

The golden-bow Dendrobium or fried-egg orchid (Dendrobium chrysotoxum) is native to Southeast Asia. It is a highly fragrant, epiphytic growing orchid species. The beautiful yellow flower with its honey-like perfume may make you feel fresh.

Chinese cymbidium (Cymbidium sinense), a high-grade traditional potted flower, is most prevalent in China and some Southeast Asian countries. The scape is 40-80 cm and this orchid develops 6-26 flowers, which are roughly 5 cm across. The flowers have a very strong scent.

Lady slipper orchid (Cypripedium calceolus) has a widespread distribution from Europe east through Asia to the Pacific Ocean and typically is found in open woodland on moist calcareous soils. It is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental plant for its attractive, ribbed foliage and unusual flowers, which feature a yellow, bladder-like lower petal topped by three upper petals with a dark burgundy or yellow coloration.
It’s high time to experience these beautiful orchid flowers. Welcome!
