“Enchanting Xishuangbanna” on show in Zhejiang Museum of Natural History Hangzhou Branch

An exhibition themed with “Mysterious tropical rainforest and enchanting Xishuangbanna” kicked off in Zhejiang Museum of Natural History Hangzhou Branch on August 2.

With Cai Xitao’s lifetime of exploring tropical rainforest as the main storyline, this exhibition shows the mystery and beauty of tropical rainforest in Xishuangbanna. It brings the charm and science knowledge of rainforest in the Lancang River Basin to the public in Zhejiang and the Yangtze River basin. The audiences are expected to be more aware of biodiversity conservation in the era of the establishment of ecological civilization.

The exhibition was co-organized by Zhejiang Museum of Natural History and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG). Ms. Lan Guoying chaired the opening ceremony. Mr. Yan Hongming and Prof. Chen Jin delivered opening speeches.

After the opening ceremony, Prof. Chen Jin was invited to deliver a popular science lecture concerning interactions among different organisms. The lecture attracted over 100 audiences on site and 4000 visitors online.

The exhibition displays 240 objects, including plant seeds, fruits, and living plants such as dancing grass, herbivorous plants, orchid mantis and specimens of milking spiders, frogs, birds, and beasts. It also displays folk custom products and exhibition plates concerning Cai Xitao’s lifetime of exploring tropical rainforest in Xishuangbanna. Prof. Cai Xitao’s research works in the 1930s and the plant specimens he collected in the 1950s are on show. 23 pictures about tropical plants and animals drawn by Zeng Xiaolian, a well-known botanical artist are displayed.

The five parts of the exhibition include “Cai Xitao – A legendary person from Zhejiang”, “Rainforest adventures in South Yunnan”, “First exploration in Xishuangbanna wonderland”, “Re-exploring the treasures of Xishuangbanna rainforest and founding XTBG” and “Tropical biodiversity research base”.

The exhibition will last from August 2 to November 2.
