The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) opened its doors to science enthusiasts last weekend (May 18-19),  to host  its 20th Public Science Day.

It engaged the public with latest sci-tech achievements and free access to its cutting-edge research facilities.

To celebrate the CAS Public Science Day, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) organized a series of public science popularization activities named "Guarding Rainforests: lets talk together. Through nine activities including online live broadcasts and offline experiences, the aim is to promote and protect tropical rainforest biodiversity from a systematic perspective of environmental interpretation.

The activities on May 18 involved scientists, professional science popularization lecturers,  graduate student volunteers, and local teenagers. As volunteer interpreters, postgraduate students of XTBG introduced rainforest protection with such themes as distinctive flowers and plants, insect hotels and beehives,  ethnic plant culture to the public. Local teenagers learned about the basic situation of tropical rainforests through activities like green island adventure and stamp collection tour.

Prof. Zhou Zhekun was specially invited to give a science popularization lecture titled "What Does Biodiversity Mean to Us?" Through vivid and interesting stories, he shared with the public both online and offline the connotation of biodiversity and its close relationship with daily life. The lecture ended with an introduction to the characteristics of Yunnan's biodiversity and the important values it contains.

Tropical bamboo diversity and ethnic cultural diversity were the focus on May 19th. Bamboo researchers, science communicators, interpreters, and Dai ethnic traditional artisans were invited to carry out environmental explanations on the theme of tropical bamboo science and culture.

On May 19th, with a focus on the topic of tropical bamboo diversity and ethnic cultural diversity, we specially invited bamboo research scientists, science popularization personnel, and Dai ethnic traditional artisans to carry out environmental explanations on the theme of tropical bamboo science and culture.

The "Guarding the Rainforest: Let's Talk Together" event is the first chapter of two special planned activities for the 20th Public Science Day and National Science and Technology Week at the Xishuangbanna Botanical Garden. In addition to the aforementioned activities, starting from May 22, the Xishuangbanna Botanical Garden will launch the second chapter "Guarding the Rainforest: Community Action", aiming to enhance public awareness, attitudes, and proactive actions towards "Guarding the Rainforest" through an educationally entertaining science feast.
