Yunnan issued its first single unified work permit to a foreigner on November 14 under a pilot scheme that offers expats easier applying procedure.

The permit was issued to Richard Corlett, a British national and a high-end talent with Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

In September 2016, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) announced that the existing Foreign Expert Permit and Alien Employment License will be merged into a single permit, and Yunnan province as one of the pilots started to issue work permits through the new system from November 1st.

The new permit was aimed to ease the burden of highly skilled expats getting work in Yunnan.  The new permit replaces the Alien Employment Permit and Foreign Experts Certificate, issued by two different government agencies, for which an expat had to spend up to months to obtain.

“It took only 3 working days from submitting applications from the internet to get the new card. Very convenient!” said Richard Corlett.

He felt very lucky to be the first foreigner to get the work permit, which allows him to work in Yunnan for three to five years.

Ricahrd Corlett is now professor and Director for the Center for integrative Conservation at XTBG. He was honored with Yunnan Friendship Award 2015 and Friendship Award 2016 of Chinese government.
