Advanced Field Course in Ecology and Conservation-Xishuangbanna 2022 opens

The Advanced Field Course in Ecology and Conservation - Xishuangbanna (AFEC-X) 2022 opened at the headquarters of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) on October 18. It is the 14th year that XTBG hosted the course. The opening ceremony brought together teachers and students.  

Following the model of the previous year, the AFEC-X 2022 integrated offline and online training. 29 students are selected to have offline courses and 54 participants from different countries will have online training.    

Prof. Yang Yongping, director of XTBG, delivered an opening speech. He introduced major missions of XTBG and encouraged students to conquer all difficulties and get a fruitful training. He declared open of the course.  

Prof. Chen Jin, head teacher of the training courses talked about the history and status quo of field trainings in tropical areas. He introduced the curriculum of the advanced field course in ecology and conservation, and asked students to fulfill the training. 

Afterwards, Prof. Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz delivered a lecture with the title of “What are Ecology and Conservation biology, how do they contribute to our conservation

The field course is sponsored by the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) and CAS Bureau of Personnel.  

The AFEC-X is an intensive course in academic skills and research methods, including literature searching, reading, PPT making and presenting skills, scientific paper writing, research design, sampling and data analysis, intended primarily for early-stage graduate students in Ecology and Conservation.   

The 6-week course included such topics as tropical environments, biodiversity science, conservation biology, plant-animal interactions, molecular ecology, open sciences, animal movement modelling, experimental design and R statistics, presentation and writing skills, etc.
