“Tree species screening and afforestation demonstration” awarded 1st prize of S&T progress by Simao

The project of “Screening tree species of good-quality, fast-growing, and high-yield timbers and afforestation demonstration in Simao Prefecture” was awarded first prize of Science & Technology Progress by Simao (now Pu’er) Municipal Government in 2006. The projectchaired by Prof. Zou Shouqing of XTBGwas a collaboration program between CAS Kunming Branch and Yunnan Provincial Government.

 

 

  Started from 1999 and passed acceptance check in 2005, the project has selected 5 species (Bennettiodendron leprosipes, Gmelina arborea, Manglietia spp., Choerospondias axillaris, and Betula alnoides ) and put them into large-scale plantation.

 

The demonstration project resulted in afforesteation of over 100,000 mu (6,667 ha or so ) of unproductive agricultural land in Jiangcheng, Jinggu, Simao, and Menglian. It has made considerable contributions to the afforestation of good-quality, fast-growing and high-yield timbers in Simao prefecture.
