It was jointly sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), CAS and the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network (ILTER).

Under the theme of "meeting the challenges of sustainable ecosystem management from local to global scale," the conference brought together about 240 scholars from more than 30 countries and regions. Also present at the opening ceremony of the meeting included CAS Executive Vice President BAI Chunli, NSFC President CHEN Yiyu, Vice Chair of ILTE Steven Hamburg, and IGSNNR Director LIU Jiyuan.
