Ailaoshan Forest Ecosystem Research Station launched a 6-ha permanent plot for subtropical forest dynamics and plant species survey in Ailao Mountain National Nature Reserve in November 2007. Up to now, site selection has been completed. With accurate positioning and topographical measurement, the construction of the observation plot is in smooth development.

The functions of the plot are for investigating plant ecological resources, identifying trees with DBH1cm, determining diameters at breast height (DBH),positioning trees, and mapping tree distribution patterns, etc.  By using the scientific facilities of XTBG Ailaoshan Forest Ecosystem Research Station and well-preserved natural subtropical forest, the Ailaoshan Subtropical Forest Dynamics Plot is expected to provide a better platform for the long-term studies of the structure, function and dynamics of subtropical forest ecosystem in Southwestern China.

XTBG Ailaoshan Forest Ecosystem Research Station is located within the Ailao Mountain National Nature Reserve, which is dominated by primary evergreen broad-leaved forest in northern crest of the Ailao Mountain Range.
