CAS and Yunnan government are to co-establish a bio-diversity laboratory in southwest China. The 220- million yuan funding for the lab construction will be shared equally by the two sides, according a proposal for the project.

The new lab is to develop several open research platforms for such research systems as screening of natural medicines, functions of genes and proteins, and ecological systems. Its establishment will be based at the CAS Kunming Institute of Zoology with support from the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany, the CAS Xishuangbanna Botanical Garden, Yuannan University, and Yunnan University of Agriculture.

The missions of the lab is to tackle issues like the formation, evolution and protection of bio-diversity and major problems for sustainable development of bio-resources in this country, so as to provide S&T support for bio-technology industries and promote local development.
