Located in Xishaungbanna Prefecture, in the western side of Lancang River, Nabanhe Nature Reserve lies in northwest of Jinghong between 22°5'-22°16'N, and 100°34'-100°43'E. The Reserve covers an area of 26,600 ha. The reserve was established in 1991 for protection of rainforests and wildlife, became a provincial nature reserve in 1997, and at a national level in 2004. The main forest types in the reserve are ever-green broad-leaved forest and tropical monsoon forest in humid valleys. The former is dominated by trees from family Fagaceae. The latter has tall emergent trees up to 40 meters with buttresses, epiphytes, lianas and a rich herbaceous layer.
In Nabanhe National Nature Reserve, where following the UNESCO Man & Biosphere concept, people are considered part of the environment and are thus permitted agricultural activities inside the reserve to a certain extent.
