Ms. Chen Jiwa, deputy secretary of the CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regional Committee, paid a visit to XTBG on May 3. Her visit was seen as a part of “educated youth back to Xishuangbanna”.
Prof. Dr. Li Qingjun, deputy director of XTBG, gave a warm reception to the guests.

As an urban middle school grad in 1970s, Ms. Chen Jiwa was sent to Xishuangbanna in 1971 and worked there for 8 years.
Knowing about XTBG’s achievements over the past years, Ms. Chen Jiwa praised XTBG for its important contribution to scientific research and local development. She also provided some constuctive suggestions on the “educated youth cultural tourism” in Xishuangbanna.

From the mid-1960s to late-1970s, about 17 million urban middle school grads answered Mao’s call and flocked to the countryside. They were encouraged to pay respect to and learn from the peasants. By 1979, most educated youth were heading back to the cities.
