During October 17-18, a 4-person delegation led by Dr. Rebecca NADIN, Director of Climate Change &Science Programme, Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate-General, China, visited XTBG to discuss cooperation on environmental education in the future.

Prof. LI Qingjun, deputy director of XTBG, introduced advances in scientific research, germplasm preservation and public education in XTBG. Mr. FU Yongneng, vice head of Public Education and Tourism Department, XTBG, reported XTBG educational programmes combined with local ethno-culture. Dr. ZHOU Wenjun delivered a presentation on applying advanced climate change research achievements to environmental education.

Dr. Rebecca and her colleagues also introduced British Consulate-General’s environmental education programmes globally, especially in China. Recently, they have a progamme focusing on climate change named as Climate Cool, which includes awareness improving, capacity building, media journalists training, social science researching, and a global climate change programs online community. As a part of Climate Cool, they have a specific programme for students known as Young Climate Change Ambassadors. They choose more than 200 outstanding students from all over the country to attend a two-week summer camp receiving training on climate change and biodiversity conservation. Dr. Rebecca was so impressed by XTBG’s environmental education programmes that she looked forward to potential cooperation with XTBG in the future.

The staff from XTBG and guests from British Consulate-General also exchanged ideas about how to combine environmental education progrmme with personal experience, the important role of Internet in environmental education, how to encourage the public to take action from improving awareness, and their thoughts on the results of Copenhagen UN Climate Change Conference 2009.
