25 staff from 17 botanical gardens of China gathered together in Kunming and Xishuangbanna during October 26 and November 7 to attend a horticulture training course at Kunming Botanical Garden, as well as at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG). The course had been arranged by the Chinese Union of Botanical Gardens (CUBG), with the aim of raising horticulture capacity throughout botanical gardens nationwide. This is the third year for CUBG to host the horticulture training course. The theory course took place in the morning,  practice in the afternoon, discussion and presentation in the evening.
Similar to the past two courses, the course 2015 was composed of seven subjects, including propagation technology – seed propagation and cutting propagation of plants; common diseases and pest insects in plants in botanical gardens; brush cutting and care of woody plants; technique of plant transplantation; effective ex situ conservation of important plant groups; ornamental plant configuration and display aimed at knowledge dissemination; use, maintenance and management of gardening machines.
Mr. Duncan Coombs and Adrian Holmes Nigel from University of Worcester traveled from UK to Kunming to teach some subjects of the CUBG course. Other teachers included Prof. Wu Jianrong from Southwest University of Forestry, Prof. SUN Weibang from Kunming Botanical Garden, Prof. Chen Jin, Ms. Hu Jianxiang, Dr. Shi Jipu, and Mr. Li Youyun of XTBG.
Different to the course in 2014, Prof. Sun Hang was invited to lecture Botanical regionalization of land plants. Prof. Sun Weibang gave an additional lecture on International code of botanical nomenclature. Two lectures on “interaction between plants and insects”, and “plant trimming and theme design” also aroused interest among the trainees.
In Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), Prof. Chen Jin and other team members designed the 4-day course in six sections. The course and activities included “how gardening management supports scientific research and species preservation”, “identification of tropical plants at species and genus levels”, “utilization of horticultural machinery”, and night watch XTBG, etc.
The course came to a successful end on November 7. Three participants who made excellent performance during the training course will be provided a chance to study in Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh or some other famous botanical gardens in UK.
