The “Botanical Garden Development & Management” training course is ongoing from September 8th to November 7th . One program of the course is “A week of visits to several leading Chinese botanical gardens”. On September 29, the trainees came to Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) for one-day visit and study. Prof. Chen Jin, director of XTBG, gave them a lecture entitled “Botanical Garden development in the Anthropocene era”.
In his lecture, Prof. Chen Jin introduced challenges faced with missing of plant diversity in the Anthropocene era, especially the impact of global climate change. He emphasized the necessity, characteristics, means and ways of establishing conservation-oriented botanic gardens. He also shared cases and achievements of XTBG and Chinese Union of Botanic Gardens (CUBG).
The trainees had discussion on development of botanic gardens, zero extinction, community-based environmental education, biodiversity conservation, etc.
Afterwards, the trainees were shown around the tropical rainforest ethnic culture museum, herbarium, central laboratory, living collections, and the tropical rainforest within XTBG.
ABOUT
The “Botanical Garden Development & Management” training course is intended to focus on and help professionals involved in botanic garden and arboretum management from the Asian developing countries. This eight-week course (from September 8th to November 7th, 2016) is organized by International Association of Botanic Gardens (IABG) Asian Division, IABG, Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden and South China Botanical Garden. Course objectives are
· To coordinate, promote and support the development and management of Asian Botanical Gardens
· To help build regional capacity and expertise at a time of rapid global change
· To strengthen botanical garden networking among the Asian developing countries and promote exchange of professional skills and ideas
