Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) held the 2024 Summer Camp for Outstanding College Students between July 27 and August 5. It is the 12th time for XTBG to holding this kind of summer camp. A total of 62 outstanding college students from 40 universities, including Peking University, Beijing Normal University, China Agricultural University, Ocean University of China, and Hainan University, gathered together here.

Prof.Yang Yongping, director of XTBG, introduced the history and future goals of the garden with the title "Treasure house of plants, paradise for scientific research," encouraging the campers to integrate their personal ideals into the construction of a strong country and bravely climb the peak of science.

Academic exchange is the core content of this summer camp. Fourteen mentors delivered cutting-edge academic lectures on various topics, including plant functional gene research, behavioral ecology, plant taxonomy, paleoecology, medicinal plants, biodiversity conservation, and environmental education practice, showcasing the diversity and interdisciplinarity of modern life sciences. The summer camp also arranged sessions on graduate education and admission policies, as well as opportunities for graduate students to share their academic research experiences.

During the summer camp, the campers visited the research facilities, living collections, and crop protection and breeding bases to understand the scientific research work of XTBG. They also participated in a variety of activities such as face-to-face interactions with teachers and students, frisbee games, and ball games for friendship.

At the closing ceremony, CPC secretary Gan Fanyuan ad Prof. Yang Jie expressed their earnest expectations for the campers. The camper representatives shared their gains and insights during the summer camp, and they sang the XTBG song “Our Garden, Our Home” in chorus.

This summer camp not only enhanced the understanding of outstanding university students in tropical botany and ecology research, but also provided a good platform for the selection and cultivation of future talents by XTBG.
