The 8th Global Botanic Gardens Congress, jointly organized by the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), was held in Singapore from 5 August to 10 August 2024. It saw the attendance of 994 delegates from over 200 botanical gardens and institutions across 74 countries. Prof. Xing Yaowu headed up an 8-person delegation of  Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) to attend the congress.

The theme of the 8th Global Botanic Gardens Congress (GBGC) is “Botanic Gardens - People and Plants for a Sustainable Future”, covering such topics as green and sustainable cities; plant diversity and conservation; engaging communities; and gardens for the future.

XTBG representatives discussed plant conservation, scientific research, and environmental education with participants from various countries. They also introduced progress in the field of plant diversity conservation. Shen Jianyong, Yang Tingting made oral presentations. Huang Tianping and Zeng Gang made poster presentations.

They also had a field visit to the Singapore Botanical Gardens and had discussion with Elango Velautham, director of plant information, resources and tree management center of the garden, on species conservation, gardening horticulture, and science popularization, as well as potential future cooperation.

The GBGC is the only global congress dedicated to Botanic Gardens. Held every three or four years, the Congress includes internationally renown plenary speakers and sessions covering topics relevant to botanic gardens such as policy, education, governance, conservation and research. This is the first time the GBGC is being held in Southeast Asia, which is home to 80 Botanic Gardens and nearly a quarter of the world’s plant and animal species.
