The 13th International Symposium on Modern Ecology (ISOMES) was held at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden(XTBG) from December 7-11. With the theme of “Global change and ecosystem resilience”, it brought together 400 scholars from a total of 93 domestic and foreign universities and research institutes.
The participants had academic exchanges on such key issues as global change and ecosystem stability, biodiversity conservation, regional sustainable development, restoration of degraded ecosystems, and the protection of endangered plants and the construction of national botanical garden systems.
Prof. Yang Yongping, director of XTBG, delivered a welcoming speech. Prof. Wu Jianguo, chairman of the ISOMES Academic Committee, introduced the development history of ISOMES and commented on the current development trends in domestic and international ecology.
Academician Yu Guirui delivered a speech via video link. He reviewed the origins of the relationship between Li Bo and modern ecological lectures. He said that ISOMES has become a high-level platform for academic exchanges among Chinese ecologists at home and abroad, and will continue to promote the development of China's ecological disciplines and the training of young ecological talents.
The conference featured a total of 89 presentations, including 6 keynote speeches, 21 invited talks, 20 youth reports, and 42 graduate student presentations. These showcased the latest frontier achievements in such areas as ecosystem diversity, stability, and sustainability under global change, from various perspectives and research scales.
The keynote speakers were Prof. He Fangliang, Prof. Han Xingguo, Prof. Feng Xiaojuan, Prof. Zhang Zhibin, Prof. Wu Jianguo, and Prof. Chen Jin. They talked about the mechanisms maintaining biodiversity; precise interpretations of the evolution of ecosystem functions under global change; the impact of drainage on wetland soil carbon storage; the spatiotemporal changes of species populations under global change; debates surrounding habitat fragmentation and its impact on conservation efforts; and the interactions within biological networks and novel plant-insect interactions.
The selection for the Academician Li Bo Graduate Student Thesis Award was also conducted during the conference.
This is the first time that the ISOMES meeting was held in a tropical region, with the highest number of participants and reports.
The conference was organized by the ISOMES series organization and academic committee, and the Chinese Ecological Society, and co-hosted by XTBG, Ecological Society of Yunnan, and Botanical Society of Yunnan.
ABOUT
The Symposium on Modern Ecology Series was initiated by CAS Academician Li Bo in 1994, and jointly launched by Chinese ecologists at home and abroad, with the aim to promote the development of modern ecology in China and strengthen international communication and cooperation between ecologists. It focuses on academic exchanges of hot spots and key issues in the field of modern ecology, holding a significant position and far-reaching influence in ecological research.
