Philippine scientist reflects on human connection in conservation work

When Nina, a young scientist from the Philippines, first came to Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in southwest China, she didn't know that it would become her second home. Now, as a postdoctoral researcher, her work explores the intricate co-evolution of plants and animals. She studies how environmental disturbances and changes in diet can alter the very structure of a species over time.

But pursuing a PhD in a remote rainforest comes with its own challenges. "If you are not so strong emotionally and mentally, this place will drive you crazy," Nina said, reflecting on the profound sense of isolation. She found her strength not only in her passion for science but also in the warmth of the international community she helped build. For Nina, effective conservation science is deeply connected to the human environment you create. Her story is a powerful testament to the idea that scientific collaboration and human connection are key to protecting our one shared future.
