CAS and the Government of Yunnan Province will each inject 0.11 billion yuan (or $14 million) for developing a Southwest Laboratory for Biodiversity in Yunnan, according to the feasibility studies of the project. The proposal was accepted by a panel of experts on 18 June in Kunming, capital of Yunnan.

According to the blueprint, the lab will be established in collaboration with Yunnan University, and with the support from such institutions as the Laboratory of Cell and Molecular Evolution at the CAS Institute of Zoology, State Key Laboratory of Phytochemistry and Plant Resources in West China at the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany, Yunnan University of Agriculture and the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden. It will carry out comprehensive studies into biodiversity protection and sustainable utilization.
