My research focuses on trying to understand the potential effects of environmental change on the distribution and diversity of Southeast Asian species across extended timescales. I try to integrate a number of approaches and methodologies, including predictive, empirical and molecular approaches to gain a more holistic understanding of the processes underlying present biodiversity patterns, and using this to extrapolate forwards under potential environmental change scenarios.
My former work has largely focussed on bats, but more recently I’ve been considering a much broader swath of taxa and trying to understand the drivers of biodiversity change and processes underlying the biodiversity patterns we see today. Using various forms of information we are trying to develop new models which better consider species ecology, and use this information to project the potential effects of environmental change on species distributions and diversity and use this as a basis for developing solid conservation plans. Furthermore I am also looking at threatened species and ecosystems (such as karsts) to try to map out diversity patterns and develop appropriate protection strategies into the future.
