  • New shrub species found in northern Myanmar
During the botanical survey in Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar, in 2017, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) collected an unknown species of Nothapodytes . It belongs to Nothapodytes because its distinctive lorate hairy petals are connated at the base, and the fleshy foliaceous disk is divided into five leaf-like lobes. The researchers named it as Nothapodytes burmanica to refer to its type locality in northern Myanmar and got it published in Nordic Journal of Botany.

  • Orchid-like insect uses petal-shaped legs to glide
The orchid mantis, Hymenopus coronatus, is well-known for its specialized shape and color — like a pinkish white orchid flower — and has long been considered a fine example of floral mimicry. While some research had already confirmed that the masquerade helps the mantis attract prey, the function of its petal-shaped legs — actually two pairs of petal-like extensions on its middle and hind legs — remained uncertain.

After careful morphological studies and literature review, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) and their collaborators confirmed the unknown species was distinctive and new to science. The new species was named Cryptocoryne zamboangaensis to refer to Zamboanga Peninsula where this species was discovered. The result was published in Nordic Journal of Botany.

After careful examination of the morphology of the species by using the collected materials, color photographs, comparing with affiliated species and, reviewing the relevant literature and digitized herbarium specimens, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) confirmed it new to science and was the fifth representative of the Begonia sect. Monophyllon A.DC.
