Abstract
The stingless bee Lisotrigona carpenteri was first described from northern Vietnam, and later on reported from Cambodia. Here, we present a new record of this species from a valley-type savanna in southwest China. Though the other two species of Lisotrigona, L. cacciae, and L. furva, showed significant tear-sucking behavior, workers of L. carpenter sampled in this study were mainly observed to suck sweat from exposed human skin, and also take tears when they find tear secretion from human eyes. How the populations of L. carpenteri survive in this extreme environment and their role in pollination for local flora are worthy of further exploration.
