About

Richard Corlett was born in London, England, and did his first degree at the University of Cambridge. He went on to do his PhD at the Australian National University, in Canberra, with field work in Papua New Guinea. He has subsequently lived and worked continuously in the East Asian tropics for nearly 40 years. He was a lecturer at Chiang Mai University (1980-82), and then moved to the National University of Singapore (1982-87) and the University of Hong Kong (1988-2008), before returning to Singapore (2008-2012). Since 2012, he has been Head of the Center for Integrative Conservation at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on ecology, conservation, and climate change biology in tropical East Asia. In addition to many scientific papers, he has written several books, including ‘The Ecology of Tropical East Asia’ (Oxford University Press, 3rd edition 2019) and ‘Tropical Rain Forests: An Ecological and Biogeographical Comparison’ (Wiley, 2nd edition 2011) co-authored with Richard Primack. He is chief editor of the journal ‘Global Ecology and Conservation’ (Elsevier), and an associate editor for ‘Biological Conservation’ and several other journals. He was a lead author for the ‘Asia’ chapter in the Working Group II contribution to the 2013 IPCC climate change report and also for the IPBES Regional Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services for the Asia-Pacific. He was a member of the Steering Committee of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Climate Change Specialist Group, 2017-2019.
