Dr. Liang Naishen of Japan National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) is a senior visiting scholar of XTBG. Recently Dr. Liang has carried out joint research activities with scientists from the XTBG Forest Ecosystem Research Center.

The scientists focused on stereoscopic observation of carbon dioxide and water at different height levels in the forest, with the assistance of documents obtained through eddy covariance of micrometeorology and chamber. They studied fluxes of carbon dioxide and water in tropical rainforest ecosystem and atmosphere.

An observation profile of carbon dioxide and water is to be newly equipped in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rainforest. It aims at making deep analyses on the characteristics of carbon dioxide and variation in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rainforest, so as to understand how it contributes to global climate changes.

During his stay in XTBG, an 8-layer CO2 observation profile system was equipped in the observation tower in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rainforest. Dr. Liang demonstrated the procedures of data collecting and details in data analyses. He also delivered a lecture with the title of “Global climate change and carbon cycle in forests”.

Dr. Liang Naishen has been dedicated to the research on carbon cycle in tropical forests and in charge of many research programs. He has developed some auto-observation instruments and utilized in his projects, which ended up with good results.
