The Global Research Network of Ficus and Fig Wasps was unveiled in Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) on September 25, offering a platform for global innovation research on fig and fig wasps. A co-construction proposal was signed at the launching ceremony.

The ‘Network’ was officially launched during the “Frontiers in Science: International workshop of Ficus and fig wasp innovation research” held on September 25-26, which focused on international Ficus-fig wasp network, frontier forum and collaborative research.

“The aim is to focus on key issues in fig-wasp evolution and research on the protection and utilization of fig tree resources, build an international cooperation network, leverage the advantages of young researchers, and carry out international collaborations with demonstrative significance,”said Prof. Peng Yanqiong of XTBG.

Prof. Yang Yongping, director of XTBG, reviewed research achievements on figs and fig wasps of the garden. He also introduced the construction of Ficus Garden and its significance in disseminating science. Prof. Martine Hosseart-Mckey, director of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Sciences at the French National Center for Scientific Research, expressed her expectations for international cooperation in the research of fig trees and fig wasps.

21 researchers presented their latest progress in Ficus and fig wasps studies at the academic exchange session.

From September 27-30, a training course was held, concerning chemical ecology of fig - fig wasp interactions, classification and revision of fig trees, resources and sustainable use of fig trees, construction of fig tree communities, and behavior of fig wasps. The participating experts guided young researchers and graduate students in conducting field surveys, teaching research methods, and writing scientific papers.

The workshop brought together over 70 experts from the French National Center for Scientific Research, the University of Harper Adams in the UK, the National Museum of Natural History in Thailand, the Ficus Germplasm Center in Sabah, Malaysia, and others.
