Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) held an international consultation meeting fro its future development on September 9. It brought together experts from Botanical Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), along with Chinese and international experts in botanical gardens, biodiversity conservation, and ecology. Prof. Chen Jin, current director of XTBG Academic Committee, chaired the meeting.
Prof. Xing Yaowu, director of XTBG, introduced the achievements and progress in scientific research, living plant collections, ex situ conservation, long-term ecological research platforms, international cooperation, and its main development priorities for the 15th 5-year plan period.
The main topics of the consultation meeting included the integration of plant collection and conservation with scientific innovation, key scientific questions for the future, regional and international leadership, and the creation and future development of a national botanical garden.
The experts regarded that XTBG should strengthen coordination among scientific research, plant conservation, resource utilization, and public education, and place greater emphasis on the scientific value and conservation outcomes of living plant collections, by further leveraging its advantages in tropical location, biodiversity resources, research platforms, and regional cooperation. XTBG should also identify long-term scientific questions with international impact.
Furthermore, the experts recommended that XTBG build on its long-standing research cooperation and talent development with Southeast Asian countries, enhance regional coordination and capacity building, and increase its international influence in tropical biodiversity research and conservation.
Concerning the creation and future development of a national botanical garden, the experts suggested XTBG further integrate scientific research, plant conservation, horticultural display, environmental education, and public services, highlight tropical Asian characteristics, and enhance its scientific content, conservation effectiveness, and public value.
