Researchers from Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have recently identified a new cryptic species of flowering plant. Cryptic species, which are morphologically almost identical to their known relatives, represent a significant yet often overlooked component of global biodiversity.
The new species, belonging to the genus Pedicularis, was found on Jiaozi Snow Mountain in north-central Yunnan. Named Pedicularis huiliniana, the finding has been formally published in the journal Willdenowia.
Pedicularis huiliniana belongs to the Pedicularis siphonantha complex (Orobanchaceae), a group characterized by its distinctive red, purple, or pink long-tubular flowers with twisted, beaked upper lips (galeas). While over 11 species are currently recognized within this complex, researchers have long faced difficulties in identifying specimens due to the loss of key diagnostic floral traits during the herbarium preparation process.
By integrating phylogenetic analyses (based on DNA regions including nrITS and matK) with detailed morphological comparisons, the researchers confirmed the existence of this new cryptic species.
Pedicularis huiliniana is a perennial herb, reaching approximately 10 cm in height. It features rose-red corollas with tubes 40–55 mm long. It is morphologically similar to Pedicularis milliana, but can be distinguished by several key characteristics: a relatively small middle lobe of the corolla lower lip, a flat corolla lower lip, a deeper anterior cleft in the calyx, and an applanate (flattened) beak structure.
The new species appears to be endemic to Jiaozi Snow Mountain in Dongchuan City, north-central Yunnan, where it thrives at elevations between 3,900 and 4,300 meters. This location marks a geographic isolation from the main distribution center of the genus in the Himalaya–Hengduan Mountains, a region that hosts approximately two-thirds of the world's over 600 Pedicularis species.
Currently, Pedicularis huiliniana is known from only a few populations, found in scrub and meadow habitats above 4,000 meters on Jiaozi Snow Mountain. These populations face increasing threats from grazing, tourism development, and outdoor activities. Based on the IUCN Red List Categories, the researchers recommend a conservation status of Vulnerable for the new species.
